Overview

The 6 Days Umbwe Route Trek is one of the most challenging and adventurous routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Famous for its steep, direct ascent and dramatic scenery, the Umbwe Route is best suited to experienced hikers and physically fit trekkers who are comfortable with demanding terrain.

The route begins on the southern side of Kilimanjaro and climbs rapidly through rainforest, moorland and alpine desert before joining the Machame Route around Barranco. From there, you continue toward Barafu Camp and make your final ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.

Because of its steep initial ascent and relatively limited acclimatization time, Umbwe is generally considered more demanding than routes such as Machame or Marangu.

Itinerary

Elevation: 1,600 m → 2,850 m
Distance: ~11 km
Trekking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast in Moshi, drive to Umbwe Gate for registration and final preparations.

Begin your trek along a steep and sometimes narrow trail through the dense rainforest. The first day is physically demanding as you gain altitude relatively quickly.

Your guides will set a steady pace and provide assistance along the trail.

Arrive at Umbwe Camp, where your mountain crew will prepare dinner and your overnight campsite.

Overnight: Umbwe Camp
Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 2,850 m → 3,960 m
Distance: ~6 km
Trekking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Rainforest → Moorland

Continue your ascent along the steep Umbwe trail as the forest becomes thinner and the landscape more rugged.

The route eventually opens into the moorland zone, with spectacular views toward Kibo and the surrounding valleys.

Continue toward Barranco Camp, located beneath the impressive Barranco Wall.

Overnight: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 3,960 m → 4,035 m
Distance: ~5 km
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

After breakfast, begin one of the most memorable sections of the trek: the climb up the famous Barranco Wall.

Although the wall looks intimidating, it does not require technical climbing. Your guides will assist you as you carefully make your way upward.

After reaching the top, continue across valleys and ridges toward Karanga Camp.

This shorter day allows your body to continue adjusting to the altitude.

Overnight: Karanga Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 4,035 m → 4,640 m
Distance: ~4 km
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

After breakfast, continue toward Barafu Camp, your final base camp before the summit.

The trail becomes increasingly barren as you climb higher into the alpine desert.

Arrive at Barafu Camp and have an early dinner. Your guides will provide a summit briefing, check your equipment and explain the final ascent.

Get as much rest as possible because the summit attempt begins around midnight.

Overnight: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 4,640 m → 5,895 m → 3,080 m
Distance: ~17 km
Trekking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert → Arctic → Moorland

This is the biggest day of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

Around midnight, begin your summit ascent under the stars.

Climb slowly toward Stella Point, located on the crater rim. From there, continue around the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m.

Stand at the highest point in Africa, celebrate your achievement and take photographs before beginning the descent.

Descend toward Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.

Overnight: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 3,080 m → 1,640 m
Distance: ~10 km
Trekking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, begin your final descent through the beautiful Kilimanjaro rainforest.

Continue toward Mweka Gate, where you will complete the park exit procedures.

Trekkers who successfully reach the required summit point will receive their Kilimanjaro summit certificates.

Your vehicle will meet you at the gate and transfer you back to Moshi.
