Overview

Experience the spectacular Mount Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route, one of Tanzania's most scenic and popular trekking routes. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame takes you through lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the high-altitude slopes leading to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

This 7-day itinerary provides an additional acclimatization day compared with the shorter Machame option, giving trekkers more time to adjust to altitude while enjoying the mountain's changing landscapes. Published operator itineraries commonly cover approximately 62 km and include the famous Barranco Wall and summit night.

Elevation: 3,840 m → 4,630 m → 3,960 m
Distance: ~10 km
Trekking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Semi-desert

Today's trek is important for acclimatization. You'll climb toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,630 m before descending to Barranco Camp.

The principle of “climb high, sleep low” helps your body adapt to the increasing altitude.

Enjoy views of the Western Breach and impressive volcanic formations before reaching Barranco Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 3,960 m → 4,035 m
Distance: ~5 km
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

Wake up to spectacular views of the Barranco Valley and the mountain above.

The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall, a challenging but non-technical climb that requires careful footing and the assistance of your experienced guides.

After crossing the wall, continue through valleys and ridges toward Karanga Camp.

Overnight: Karanga Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 4,035 m → 4,640 m
Distance: ~4 km
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today's trek is relatively short but physically demanding because of the altitude.

Continue toward Barafu Camp, your final base before the summit attempt. After arriving, have an early dinner and rest.

Your guides will provide a summit briefing and prepare you for the midnight ascent.

Overnight: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 4,640 m → 5,895 m → 3,080 m
Distance: ~17 km
Trekking Time: 12–15 hours

This is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

You will begin the summit attempt around midnight, climbing slowly through the darkness toward Stella Point on the crater rim.

From Stella Point, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m, the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating at the summit and taking photographs, begin your descent toward Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing to Mweka Camp.

Overnight: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 3,080 m → 1,640 m
Distance: ~10 km
Trekking Time: 3–4 hours
