7-Day Rongai Route Trek – Kilimanjaro Climb

From $2250

From $1950

Overview

The 7 Days Rongai Route Trek offers a quieter and more remote approach to Mount Kilimanjaro from the northeastern side of the mountain, close to the Tanzania–Kenya border.

Rongai is particularly attractive for trekkers looking for a less crowded trail and a gradual ascent through beautiful forests, moorlands and alpine landscapes. The route eventually joins the main Kilimanjaro summit trails before the final ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

After reaching the summit, you descend through the southern side of the mountain via the Mweka Route, allowing you to experience different landscapes during your ascent and descent.

Itinerary

Elevation: 2,020 m → 2,625 m
Distance: ~8 km
Trekking Time: 3–4 hours

After breakfast in Moshi, drive toward the northeastern side of Kilimanjaro and complete registration at Rongai Gate.

Begin your trek through cultivated land before entering the montane forest. The Rongai trail is generally quieter than the Machame and Marangu routes.

Elevation: 2,625 m → 3,630 m
Distance: ~9 km
Trekking Time: 6–7 hours

With clear weather, you'll have impressive views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding volcanic landscape.

After breakfast, leave Mawenzi Tarn and cross the high-altitude Saddle, the broad desert-like area between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you approach Kibo.

Arrive at Kibo Camp, your final resting point before the summit attempt. After an early dinner, prepare your equipment and get some sleep before the midnight ascent.

Continue along the crater rim toward Stella Point and then onward to Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m, the highest point in Africa.

Celebrate your achievement, take photographs and enjoy the extraordinary views before beginning the long descent.
